The Montessori Method

Dr. Montessori believed that no human being is educated by another person. The young child possesses what Montessori termed "the absorbent mind" and seeks to build or construct his/her very being.  Dr. Montessori felt that the goal of early childhood education is to cultivate the child's own natural desire to learn. Most lessons in the Children's House environment are given as individual presentations because the young child is creating his/her own intellect and personality.  The core Montessori pedagogy is similar in practice and belief to the values of the American Indian culture and values.

In the environment, children will engage in:

  • Exercises of Practical Life
  • Sensorial Experiences
  • Language—including Native Language
  • Direct and Indirect preparation to become strong Writers and Readers
  • Direct and Indirect preparation for Math

 A Strong Cultural Self

Cultural identity begins at birth.  The cultural values of many American Indian nations are the belief that children are sacred gifts to be protected, respected and cherished.

Embedding Culture and Language

The American Indian culture and language are a very important part of our work.  Children are exposed to the native culture in all that they see, do and practice.  Children are given the opportunity to learn and absorb the native language from a fluent native speaker every day, however we are not an native language immersion setting. Children will have the opportunity:

  • To see and be cared for by American Indian staff
  • To hear native language and oral stories
  • To feel welcome and safe in a beautiful, culturally-reflective environment
  • To explore and experience the wonder of the world around us
  • To speak and develop their native language
  • To share and learn ‘we are all related"

Native Language Kit

MAICC is pleased to share materials from the Ojibwe and the Dakota Language Kits for check out. These kits were produced by MNTrecc.  Please call to inquire.
